A short history of our group
The modern Temple of Mithras group has its roots in England. In 1949 the Carrawbugh Mithraea (there are three of them) on Hadrian's Wall in Northumbria was rediscovered. Then in 1954 the London Mithraeum was excavated during post-war construction (see photo). These events inspired a small group of enthusiasts into what we see as a rebirth of Mithraism in the UK.
During the 1960's we developed away from reconstructionism and towards a modern neo-pagan Mithraism.
By the 1980's there were Mithraist groups in the UK, USA, Canada, Italy and Hong Kong.
Thanks
We would like to thank the generations who have brought the Mithraic revival. We won't list names but you know who you are.
We would like to thank Michael Bloomberg for his purchase of and protection of the Walbrook Mithraeum.
