The spirituality of January

January is named after the Roman God Janus who is a God of Transitions. Janus rules over new beginnings and new endings. Traditionally Janus had no formal priesthood but was ubiquitous in the religious life of Romans. Beginnings and Endings of things being common enough that keeping the rites of Janus to specific times would have been nonsensical. You might may an offering to this God if you are setting out on a journey, starting a new job or finishing an old one. The role of Janus in the calendar emphasises the idea that the month of Janus is a new start, a door that has just opened and sometimes to go through such a threshold we have to close the door of the place we have just left. So this is a time for leaving behind some things and looking forward to the new.

We wish you a happy January!
